Day 4 - Nanchang

It’s 6:00 AM here in Nanchang. Today our group has decided to take a side tour to the villages and then after lunch a trip to the Pavilion (not sure of the name). Eme continues to be a happy little rockstar, but she had her first difficult time going down to sleep last night. Up until last night, I would simply lay her in her crib and sit next to her on the bed while smiling and holding her hand for both nighttime and naptime. She wasn’t going for it last night, so I strapped her in the Ergo and I felt her little body go limp. I rocked her until she fell fast asleep and then performed the tricky task of removing her and laying her down. It took all of 5 minutes in the Ergo. It seems to be a security thing for her. She lights up when I get it out. She is definitely cutting teeth and yesterday the clear runny nose joined the other symptom of a low grade fever. She’s not feeling spectacular, but she’s still a good sport.

One of the babies in our group started walking yesterday She was Eme’s neighbor and apparently they spent much time playing together. They are the same age. I still think Ems is to weak and unsure of what to do with those crazy legs of hers.

We tried to get a cab to take us to Pizza-Hut last night, but the cab driver seemed very irritated. So we decided to wait for another one. Little did we know that would be our last chance. There were several of us wanting to go, so we walked to KFC not too far from here and stopped at the grocery for some beer on the way back. The grocery sounded like Wall-Street in the middle of the afternoon. So many people and they all seem so loud. The walk in itself proved to be death defying. It’s crossing the roads that make it all so difficult. Nobody pays attention to direction, lines or signs….it’s just crazy.

I was woken up by fireworks at 6 in the morning. Apparently, the Dragon Boat Festival party has begun. Somebody should really explain to them that fireworks are for nighttime. Eme threw a few kisses Daddy’s way yesterday, but still freaks if he tries to hold her. It’ll happen soon enough though.

We are really tired of the food. Everything just has a funky dink odor to it. I’m having a hard time finding the love of authentic Chinese food and I eat just about anything. J thinks he’s about to starve to death.

Emerson is stirring in her crib, so it’s time for me to make sure I’m completely ready so I am the first thing her little eyes see when they peek open. We are off for day 4 with our beautiful daughter. :)

I'm already thinking I'm going to be dropping some weight there. You know how picky I am....I order chicken wings when I go out for Mexican.

Enjoy your day with your beautiful girl!! I hope she feels better today too.

Loving all of these updates and photos... Thank you so much for sharing everything!!

Eme is just such a beautiful, happy little girl. It's so good to hear that she is attaching to you for all things comfort. J is such a good daddy letting her take her time with him. It must be so hard on him though.. she's so dang cute he must just want to snuggle her like crazy. Like you said... in time.

Hope you guys can find some palatable food soon :o)

keep those gorgeous photos coming!!!

Yahoo......an update. I'll tell you these blogs are the 21 centuries soaps :) So glad that everything is going well, as you said she will come around to Dad real soon. I imagine a McDonald burger and fries would be good right about now. Continuing to pray for safe travels and good health. Keep us updated... she is just so darn cute.

He, I wonder if that is the same KFC where I got my famed chicken with some feathers still on it. Believe it or not, I didn't really mind. I plucked them off and kept going because at least I knew it was a chicken then ;0)

Glad Miss Eme is digging that Ergo. She lights up when it comes out and C did a contortionist backbend...go figure. They are so different, these little ones.

I so know what you mean about the food and just the environment there in general! If it hadn't been for peanut butter crackers, poor Jennifer would've starved to death. Meigan gobbled up everything!
So glad things are still going well! Eme is just precious! Love your updates and pics!

I loved the food in Beijing, struggled with it in Nanchang, and loved it in Guangzhou. Hopefully you'll find better food and be able to fill you tummy once in Guangzhou!

I'm so glad to hear she's doing well! Poor Daddy, tell him Jaden did the same thing to Derek (actually, she wasn't fond of men in general) and she's a MAJOR Daddy's girl now. Like you said, just give her some time and she'll share the love.

Sorry about the food, I bet you'll find more that you like in Guangzhou. Have a great day!

Funny to read about your food issues- we had alcohol issues while in Salt Lake City for our adoption.

Love your updates, keep them coming!

SO happy things are going so well. I know it must be hard on J to sit back and wait for Eme to come around. How awesome you both are doing what is best for Eme. Have fun on your tour.

I am loving all the updates. Our daughter treated my husband the same way. He won her over by feeding her Cheerios. Anyway, about the food, we would try and smuggle stuff off the breakfast buffets to take back to our room to eat later (fruit, danishes...) We all dropped a ton of weight in China, unfortunately it all came back! Our son was 4 at the time and he ate spaghetti noodles with ketchup every night for dinner.

Your blog is bringing back so many wonderful memories. Thanks for that!
Emerson is so beautiful and it sounds like she is going to be fine. Can you believe how slowly time went when you were waiting and now you've had her for 4 days already!

I too could not stand the food after a few days. Not even the "american" food. Guess that's why I lost 10 pounds. (I wish they would have stayed gone)

Glad to hear the ergo is working well for the two of you. Great bonding moments.

I am in awe that you were able to get a sleeping Emerson out of the ergo and into the crib without her waking up - that took skills!
How special for that other family to see their daughters first steps. good stuff.
maybe the lack of appetite will balance out the lack of BM's???????

Ok, "the funky dink odor" comment cracked me up! When you get to Guangzhou, ask for directions to the Italian Restaurant. It's on the opposite end from the White Swan near the entrance to the island. The food is AWESOME and the pizza is delicious. Seriously very good food. It's actually run by an Italian guy! Anyway, pasta and a glass of wine was heaven for me. We were there last August so I hope for you sake it's still there! Emerson is a doll and I loved the new pictures!

Glad everything is going well and Eme already has such a strong attachment to mama. How great that the Ergo helps her sleep in your arms. Wow! That is huge and something we still strive for after nearly 18 months home. You have a beautiful daughter (as if you didn't know ;))

First of all- you look wonderful with your daughter. She is a real beauty. I am so happy for you.
Now about the food. I am SOOOO glad to hear you say that about the food in Nanchang. We were there in 2005 and it was the same thing for us. It was awful and I really did not want to get to China and be all down on the food but it is strange there isn't it? So okay. Just wait until you hit the breakfast buffet at the White Swan (if you are going there?). I swear after a week of warm soda and white rice, I was so thankful to smell familiar smells wafting down the big hallway towards us- I nearly fell on my knees and wept! There will be pancakes. Pancakes and fruit and milk....oh yes you will be able to eat again. In the meantime- avoid the "frog in brown sauce" at all cost. My husband tried this and still gets back shivers and nausea when he remembers......
Wishing you all well...
Oh yeah, your E looks like she will be able to handle all of those big brothers! She has the best little gleam in her eyes!

Annie still goes to sleep being rocked like she is in her carrier!!! It is great- you guys look so happy, it is wonderful to see.
We ate at a few restaurants in Nanchang and it was interesting. The hotel food was the best food we had there. The food in Beijing was wonderful, it just depends on the region and what you like I think. I found Nanchang damp overall but of course, it rained the whole time we were there.
